Thanksgiving is a day to spend with friends and family, but for many people, it’s also a day to go shopping. Whether you’re picking up last-minute essentials for the big meal or heading out to grab some Christmas bargains, you won’t be alone.
Once rare, shopping on Thanksgiving has become more popular in recent years. While many stores used to wait until Friday morning to open their doors, these days, eager consumers can go straight from the dinner table to the mall. But not every store is embracing this new Turkey Day tradition.
These department stores are closed on Thanksgiving Day
This year, 70% of people consulting firm PwC surveyed said they planned to shop on Thanksgiving Day. That’s up from 40% in 2016. Not all those people will be shopping at brick-and-mortar retailers, though. More than half of people surveyed said they’d be browsing for deals online.
Those who do prefer to shop in person on Thanksgiving should plan their shopping trip carefully. Close to 100 major chains are staying closed for the holiday, while others will have reduced holiday schedules.

Malls closed on Thanksgiving Day
Most malls will be open on Thanksgiving Day, even if some stores are closed. But a few malls have decided to buck the holiday shopping trend and close on Thanksgiving. CBL Properties, which owns 114 malls around the U.S., will close all its malls until Friday morning for the third year in a row. The Mall of America in Minnesota will also close. Other closures include South Coast Plaza in Orange County, Exton Square Mall outside of Philadelphia, and the Tri-County Mall in Cincinnati.
“By continuing the practice of closing our centers on Thanksgiving this year, we are ensuring our customers and employees have the opportunity to celebrate to the fullest – spending Thanksgiving with family and friends and then waking up early to spend Black Friday with us,” Stephen Lebovitz, chief executive officer, CBL Properties said in a statement. “The support that we’ve received over the last two years from our customers and retailers has been overwhelming. It is based on this feedback that we made the decision to close yet again this year.”
