Sears Offers Curbside Service With In-Vehicle Pickup Program

Sears (NASDAQ:SHLD) launched a new program on Monday that allows consumers to online shop while still avoiding shipping fees. According to PR Newswire, the retailer introduced In-Vehicle Pickup, which is a service that enables customers to pick up their online purchases at any Sears store within five minutes of their arrival from the comfort of their own cars. In-Vehicle works alongside Sears’s Shop Your Way loyalty program, and the app attached to that membership does most of the dirty work.

PR Newswire says that in order to reap the benefits of the new convenient program, Shop Your Way members shop online, complete their purchases via computer or mobile device, and then choose the In-Vehicle Pickup option at checkout. Customers input the details of the vehicle they will be picking up their products in, and when they are ready to complete their pickup, they sign in to their Shop Your Way mobile app and enable location services before leaving for Sears.

Once customers arrive at their local store, members must pull in to the designated In-Vehicle Pickup spots located outside of the merchandise pickup location, use the Shop’In feature in the Shop Your Way mobile app to initiate In-Vehicle pickup, and then a timer will start on the phone. Within five minutes, a Sears employee will bring the purchased product to the customer’s car and verify the purchase using the payment method dictated online.

Sears executives are excited about the company’s latest program, believing that it sets the retailer apart from the rest. Leena Munjal, senior vice president of Member Experience and Integrated Retails for Sears, said to PR Newswire: “The In-Vehicle Pickup option takes our ‘Free Store Pickup — Ready in 5′ guarantee even further and out to the parking lot. In-Vehicle Pickup on this scale is an industry first and another example of how we are constantly innovating and adding benefits that make shopping a more convenient experience for our members.”

Coming off several disappointing quarters, Sears has been banking on its Shop Your Way loyalty program to continue bringing customers in. Sears knows that a significant portion of its consumer base is cost-conscious shoppers, and that’s why the retailer is working to mirror certain popular loyalty programs such as those used by Macy’s (NYSE:M) and  Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX).

Sears took its Shop Your Way program a step further when it launched the Shop’In feature on the Shop Your Way mobile app to help connect in-store and online shopping. According to PR Newswire, Sears customers who use Shop’In from the app while at or near a Sears or Kmart store can unlock special deals and personalized offers, as well as take advantage of coupons, price and product comparisons, customer reviews, and sweepstakes.

In order to become a member of Sears’s Shop Your Way loyalty program, one needs to only sign up — it is a free member-based loyalty program. PR Newswire reports that unlike other rewards programs, there is no minimum required for Shop Your Way members to redeem points, and shoppers can always earn and redeem points based on purchases.
