Johnny Depp was named one of the highest-paid actors in the world over the last couple of years. Just how much does he get paid for some of his top movies? Here’s what we know about how much Johnny Depp earned for Fantastic Beasts.

The early years

Johnny Depp’s first love is music. As a teen, he sought refuge from problems at home by staying in his room and playing guitar. His parents divorced when he was 15, and at the age of 16 he dropped out of high school and joined a garage band named The Kids. He told People magazine his early years were a bit of a blur: “Puberty was very vague,” he said. “I literally locked myself in a room and played guitar.”

It turns out Depp and his band mates had talent. They were good enough to open for the Talking Heads and the B-52s. Unfortunately, living the garage band life wasn’t enough to pay the bills. Depp had no other choice but to live in a friend’s ’67 Chevy Impala for a few months. He told People he tried to make ends meet by selling pens for a telemarketing firm.

Depp made his acting debut in the 1984 movie A Nightmare on Elm Street. He played the role of Glen Lantz. One year later, he starred in the film Private Resort. Depp moved on to the small screen making appearances in TV shows such as Lady Blue and Slow Burn.

His rise to fame

Depp gained popularity after appearing in the hit TV series 21 Jump Street. He played the role of Tom Hanson from 1987 to 1990. After 21 Jump Street, Depp starred in films such as Edward Scissorhands (1990), What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Financial trouble

Despite the fame and fortune, Depp hit a rough patch in his personal life. A 2018 Rolling Stone interview revealed Depp was facing financial difficulties. “It’s estimated that Depp has made $650 million on films that netted $3.6 billion. Almost all of it is gone. He’s suing The Management Group, run by his longtime business manager, Joel Mandel, and his brother Robert for negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud,” reports Rolling Stone. The Mandels denied any wrongdoing. It was also later reported Depp was spending $2 million a month to maintain his lifestyle, which included a whopping $30,000 a month on wine.

Depp was also facing a lawsuit from his former bodyguards over unpaid wages and unsafe working conditions. Making things even more complicated, the star went through a messy divorce, resulting in him having to pay a $7 million divorce settlement to ex-wife Amber Heard.
